What is advertisement?
Advertisement is a visual announcement or notification displayed to the public in order to promote a product, service or event. Advertisement can be presented through different social platforms such as YouTube or TV. In some cases, there will be advertisement publicizing a job vacancy.
What is the purpose of advertising?
The purpose of advertising is to communicate information to customers regarding a company's services or products in hope of convincing them that they are the best and for them to buy it. It will help to enhance sales as the customers will be provided with information on a broad social scale. Advertising will allow a company to upgrade their image and help to create brand recognition. This will create a demand and need for the company's products or services which is effective as customers will be interested and will become reliable.
How do they achieve this purpose?
Advertisements achieve their purpose of creating a demand for products and services, and expanding their market, by appealing to the customers in a unique way. The advertisements will communicate clear information to the customers and will counter any other rival products or services by pointing out advantages over similar products or services. The customers will want to feel like they are going for the best in the market, and the advertisements are crucial in helping them make their minds.
The video above is an example of TV advertising from Nike which is an American multinational corporation and is available on many other platforms as well. The advert demonstrates the usage of the product that is being advertised in the Nike 'CTR360' through the main character, Cesc Fabregas. The advert product that was Nike's latest edition of football boots takes on a realistic form through the use of celebrity endorsement as the recognised football player puts the product to work. Through the advert's narrative, it creates a demand for the product as other football player will wish to purchase the football boots. The advert focuses on the player's performance on the pitch as he takes total control of the game, and this is effective as it presents an advantage over other plain football boots. The Nike 'CTR360' is an abbreviation for 'Control' and the audience will be appealed by the benefits of the football boots. The boots were debuted by Cesc Fabregas in a live football match which is also another form of advertising in itself. In this advertisement it is clear to see the way in which Nike communicates to the audience that they have released new football boots, as they attract them through the narrative and also through the recognised football player that appears. The fact that a recognised football player is using the product, motivates the audience to do the same as they will feel that they are going for the best product. The advertisement cleverly utilises the characteristics, style, form and other conventions to great effect as the target audience will be appealed by it.
The target audience for this advertisement would naturally be football players who would most likely be interested in the latest football boots. The primary target audience would be boys aged 13-23 of any race. The secondary target audience would be women as well who may be into football and interested with the latest football boots by Nike. Audiences that are from a working class would also be the primary target audience, however other audiences from different classes may be interested. Regarding geo-demographics, audiences in the U.S and UK will be the primary target audience as Nike is a U.S company and football in the UK is famous, thus the reason for the advert being broadcast in the UK as well. In terms of psychographic profiling, the target audience for this advertisement will primarily be aspirers as the target audience is young footballers who seek to improve themselves and by acquiring the latest Nike product, they can improve themselves. Despite this, a pair of football boots can also be of interest to mainstreamers, traditionalists, succeeders, reformers or individualists as it is a necessary asset to play football. In the socio-economic model, the target audience for the advertisement will be located in the 'E' category where students and casual workers fall. However, other audiences with different occupations or income can be appealed by the advertisement and its product. As well as this, audiences that are solely interested in Cesc Fabregas can be targeted by the advertisement as they will follow his work closely. Female audiences may also be appealed sexually by the celebrity who is a recognised sportsperson and model for other products.
Other forms of advertisement include radio, print or digital adverts. There are many different ways advertisement can be distributed despite TV advertisement being the most effective form of advertisement for production companies.
Radio adverts - The radio is an effective way to distribute advertisement as it is commonly used by audiences for entertainment or news. On different radio stations, companies may advertise their product or service in a short space of time before the station continues its normal activities. For instance, when audiences are listening to a music station, they will also be informed of the stations sponsorship or other adverts between the songs.
Print adverts - Print adverts come in the form of newspapers, magazines, leaflets, brochures and more. It is effective as audiences will pick up print adverts and view advertisements without intention and become interested.

Adverts can also be distributed in cinema before the start of a film where companies may choose a particular film genre to target a specific target audience that will more likely make them interested to the product or service being advertised.
The role of technology in advertisement is crucial as much of adverts distributed is through TV and social platforms including YouTube. Technology allows for the audience to consume advertisements and become aware of the product or service.
